Shrapnel Helmets

The steel helmet was a comparatively late addition to the infantryman’s equipment. The French Adrian helmet was adopted in 1915, but it was thin and provided minimal protection. German soldiers wore the spiked leather Pickelhaube until early 1915 when the distinctive Stalhelm began to be issued. The British ‘Brodie’ helmet was not issued until early 1916, and so few were available that battalions in the front line had to hand them over to their replacements. It is estimated that shrapnel helmets prevented about 80 per cent of fatal head wounds. By the time of the Somme battles soldiers on both sides wore the ‘tin hat’, and it has since become a potent symbol of modern warfare.
